DANCE NATION

an unproduced scenic design

based on the play by Clare Barron

For this class project, I developed an original scenic design concept for Clare Barron’s Dance Nation. My vision centered on capturing the chaotic and emotionally charged atmosphere of adolescence within a crowded dance studio. I imagined the characters remaining on stage throughout the show, reflecting the constant presence and scrutiny that teenagers often feel. The shared, confined space symbolizes their lack of privacy, emphasizing the intensity of their relationships and experiences.

To enhance the feeling of immersion, I designed the set for a black box theater, crafting an open and dynamic layout that invites the audience into the studio alongside the dancers. Playing with levels was a key element of the design, creating a layered and visually engaging environment that mirrors the complexity and chaos of adolescence. The set’s fluidity and openness ensured the audience would feel part of the dancers’ world, sharing in their triumphs, tensions, and turmoil.

This design package was done in SketchUp and AutoCAD.
